The Metropolitan Police Service was founded in 1829 and occupies a unique position in the history of policing. It is one of the largest police services in the world, responsible for policing a capital that is more populous. The MPS comprises more than 55,000 Police Officers, Police Staff, Traffic Wardens, Police Community Support Officers and volunteers, who form a wider policing family that looks after more than 7 million Londoners, and millions of commuters and visitors, over an area of 620 square miles.
